On July 14th, our dog Maple passed away from Leukemia at the tender age of 9. I never had a cat or a dog growing up since my mom was afraid so I was completely unprepared for how difficult this was going to be. We grieved, a lot. Our other dog had no idea why she was receiving so many hugs and despite her own mourning she was there for us and helped us through. In honour of Maple's my wife and I decided we wanted to do our part in the world of animal rescue.
First, on August 6th we adopted a small black and white female kitten which we named Annakin due to her Jedi like quickness. Notice the two n's in Annakin. Clever, isn't it? She captured our hearts immediately and helped get our dog Sassy out of her funk. The two are now the greatest of friends, playing together and grooming each other. We couldn't ask for anything better.
Our sweet little kitten, Annakin.

Next, we volunteered at the Ottawa Humane Society. My wife started as dog walker and from her discussions with the volunteer coordinator, she volunteered me as photographer. We've been in every day since August 25th and there is no shortage of animals to take photos of. And they are all so sweet. My goal is to create as many 'cute' photos as possible in order to help increase traffic not only on their web site but also foot traffic going into their shelter to see the animals first hand. So far I think it's been working as a staff member has mentioned to me that the photos have generated more interest in their dogs. That comment alone has given me the drive to continue volunteering since knowing that the little part I am doing, a part that I enjoy because I get to take photographs, is helping some of these animals to find homes where they will be loved - well, who wouldn't feel good about that! Here's a small sample of some of the photos I've taken for them so far.

My wife and I had discussed starting our own rescue organization but lack of funds has those plans on the back burner. For now we are happy working with the Ottawa Humane Society and helping them with their goal of finding homes for all of the animals at the shelter, from cats to dogs, hamsters to lizards.

I have no replaced the camera with the brush, but I am still continueing to understand the fine arts and my place in all of it.
Thanks again,
Mitch

My world is always ending, no matter what,
and I've little reason to not want it to end.
However, a woman... a certain woman slows down that ending...
and gives it reason.
